Packages & costs
We offer a range of research packages to investigate and document your family history. Our packages allow us to source a large volume of fascinating information and paint a vivid picture of what life for your ancestors was really like. A research package can also make a fantastic gift for someone special.
Introductory search - £150 This is an exploratory search into the statutory period only (post 1855). 
Single family line search - £250 This is a detailed search which traces a single Scottish family line as far back as possible within the time allocated through the searching of statutory records, census returns, old parish records and many other information sources as appropriate. Please see our example single family line search report to view typical results. Results are normally returned within four weeks.
Dual family line search - £450 This offers the same as a standard search, but researches both parental family lines. Please see our example dual family line search report to view typical results. Results are normally returned within six to eight weeks.
Please note that prices for other packages, tailored to your specific requirements, can be provided upon request - simply contact us with your details. Ad-hoc research and investigation work at local archives, including New Register House and the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh, can be commissioned on an hourly basis at a standard rate of £20 per hour.
Our fees reflect the time and skills required to properly carry out the work, and also cover all costs incurred by us in accessing historical records and visiting locations if necessary. The price quoted to you is the total prices that you will pay - there are no additional or hidden charges. All fees are in Pounds Sterling (GBP). You can access a currency converter here.
Upon completion of any investigation you will receive from us a professionally presented folder containing:
- an attractive, detailed and plain English report explaining all of the research results;
- copies of the original records and documents we've discovered throughout the research process;
- a chart clearly illustrating your family tree;
- suggestions for further research; and
- a CD containing digital versions of all of the above with a GEDCOM 5.5 file containing all of the genealogy information found.

We will confirm your order within 24 hours and clearly outline the information we require from you in order to get started with the work straight away.
Please note that payment must be made in advance of any work. Payment can be made by cheque to 'Laura Hughes trading as Thistle Ancestry', by electronic bank transfer or by credit/debit card via PayPal.
